A MYSTERY councillor on Wokemoreland and Farcical Council owes the authority a whopping £2,773 in unpaid Council Tax.
The scandal had to be dragged out of the Council in a Freedom of Information request by hyperlocal news website Penrith Town.
A week ago, the Lib Dem dictatorship voted through another 4.99% Council Tax rise for 2025/26.
Yet one of the Council’s 65 councillors has £1,675 owing from 2024-25 and £1,098 owing from 2023-24.
It has led to the Council issuing summonses against them, reports Penrith Today.
The articles that the Chronic has seen so far leave more questions than answers.
Q1: Why is the Liberal Democrat Council allowing Council PR Spinners to CONCEAL the serving Councillor’s identity?
Q2: Given the outstanding sum, why didn’t the Council just DEDUCT the unpaid Council Tax from the £13,500 that the Councillor is paid by the Council every year as a basic rate?
Q3: WHICH political party does the Councillor represent?
Q4: HAVE they declared an interest or withdrawn from votes on setting the Council Tax?
Q5: Will political group leaders for all the parties on the Council confirm it is NOT one of their Councillors who owes the money?
Q6: Has the Councillor now paid up, as at 25th February, 2026?
After all, if the Councillor can’t be BOTHERED to pay Council Tax, why should Council Tax money be used to pay them £13,500 a year.
The Council is also playing silly buggers by shielding the Councillor’s identity.
By the Council’s judgement, the Councillor’s “right to privacy” outweighs the public’s right to know.
How convenient!
How about listening to the public’s views?
There aren’t many people who would vote for a Councillor who hadn’t paid their Council Tax, and their voters deserve to know who they are.
Once again, we have the ludicrous situation where Council staff PAID for by the public are then keeping the truth FROM the public.
