THE latest Council story noticeable for its absence in our “newspapers” here is the small matter of external auditors MOVING IN at Crumberland Council.
Local Government finance wizards, Grant Thornton, are expected to remain there until August, kicking accountancy ass.
Labour-daft Crumberland Council will face a massive bill for this intervention. (£100,000+ at a cautious outside estimate.)
Not that the tortoise-like News & Scar; the Times & (Red) Star or The Crumbling News have shown any interest in exposing these developments.
Our papers are slow to move and quick to retreat into their shells when it comes to asking hard questions of the Labour-led leadership.
Crumberland has finally coughed up the long-delayed Copeland Borough Clowncil accounts but still hasn’t published its own accounts for 2023-24.
The deadline was 200 days ago at the end of last September!
Despite being given FERGIE TIME to produce them by 16th January this year, Crumberland again couldn’t manage it. A subsequent deadline of 28th February was also missed.
Crumberland now expects to publish its 2023-24 accounts a YEAR overdue in September 2025. That’s a mere 17 months after the end of the financial year that they pertain to!
Outside auditors have again coolly reminded the Council that it’s failing to meet LEGALLY REQUIRED deadlines.
It’s the poor staff that have stayed on that we feel sorry for and why hasn’t a Director’s head bounced down the steps of the Civic Centre?
Councils have to publish accounts on time so that an impartial opinion can be provided of their ability to handle millions of pounds of public money.
For these responsibilities, it’s why Council Directors pocket salaries of £1o0,000+.
Yet when it comes to looking into Council news, our “newspapers” seem content to idly fill their columns with endless back-of-the-paper planning applications for new nail bars or the demolition of old farmhouses.
It’s not the only thing that’s dilapidated and needs demolishing!
Maybe a newspaper or two here has to close down before Churnos wake up & smell the Kenco that they’re sleepwalking their way to the dole queue.
They can’t say they weren’t warned.
