RESIDENTS of Barrow should be warned that their WEEKLY bin collections could be cut to FORTNIGHTLY from September.
Lib Dem power councillors in charge of Wokemoreland & Farcical Council want Barrow’s grey bins to achieve their full aromatic potential from autumn, or so the Chronic has learned from a spy.
Barrow – whose litter problem again hit the headlines recently – is the only town across the enormous new W&F Council area to still have their 120-litre general waste bins picked up weekly.
Everywhere else – from Kendal to Penrith – have theirs taken away every fortnight.
This has long been the Lib Dem way of doing things when they controlled South Lakeland. With the virtuous Lib Dems now running the show at W&F, steps are being taken to “correct” the Barrow anomaly.
The changes are being spun by the Clowncil as a way to “harmonise” the bin pick-up regime.
Ah, the old “harmonising” trick – which is Council-speak for doing less and suggesting its progress.
Weekly bin collections across the Allerdale area of Cumbria were scrapped when Crumberland Council helpfully decided to “harmonise” those with fortnightly Carlisle and Copeland.
Thoughtful Lib Dem beard-strokers on W&F will have long struggled to get their heads around the fact that Barrow generates a lot of rubbish for landfill; still enjoys a weekly grey bin collection; and has “piss poor” recycling rates compared to the other honeypot towns within its purview
(Nearly half of the stuff put out with the recycling in the Barrow area goes straight to landfill as it’s persona non grata.)
The impending change may or may not be related to the fact that the high-ranking Councillor in charge of waste collection is Cllr Giles Archibald, the famed “Eco-messiah”, of Kendal.
‘Archiballs’, an unapologetic and uncompromising Green radical, is enthusiastically driving through the Net Zero agenda at the Council as part of his frankly ridiculous but very important portfolio of “Climate Change, Biodiversity & Environmental Services”.
‘Archiballs’, whose legendary sermons about sustainability can sometimes last longer than a bin lorry round, has long warned that society needs to mend its broken ways…even though Barrow’s perennial litter problem is certain to get WORSE if bins hang around for a fortnight.
The Committee running the rule over these yet-to-be-made changes has just a single Barrow councillor on it – another ridiculous outcome of Local Government Disorganisation.
He’s a (trusty) Labour councillor, but when it comes to voting he is vastly outnumbered by five out-of-the-area Lib Dems, who won’t be keen to queer the pitch with the powerful and persuasive Archiballs.
Ironic really that in a town where there is not a single elected Lib Dem, bin owners in Barrow will shortly become the unwanted beneficiaries of a long-standing Lib Dem virtue signal policy!
“Voters in Barrow might want to think about “harmonising” Councillors at the next election so that Kendal’s not making unpopular changes to services in Barrow!” huffed my sarcastic spy.
Expect the Council to run to the Evening Snail and bleat: “No decisions have been taken yet”.
Don’t say the Chronic didn’t warn you.
