CRUMBRIA: 08/05/2025

By Greta Thunderface
A THIRD comrade on Crumberland Council has handed in her red rosette and moved on to greener pastures – literally.
With a swish of drama about it, Cockermouth councillor Helen Tucker joins the Green Party telling the world that Starmer’s Labour is: “Not the party I joined”.
Hear, hear!

The teacher’s resignation statement rambled on to more than 400 words. It touched on education funding, child poverty, Winter Fool decisions and a number of other bread ‘n’ butter issues affecting her ward of Cockermouth North… Palestine, Gaza, genocide, Israel, arms funding etc etc.
Many commentators piling in have been making a similar point.
Labour votes put her on the Council so surely it would have been fairer for her to step down and contest the seat as a Green at a by-election?
Using her own logic, she’s not the party people voted for?
So far it does not appear that she’s addressed this point.
Standing as a Green in an open contest may not be advisable at this time. In the 2022 local elections, the Greens only polled a weedy 5.4% across Crumberland.
That put the eco-hued party a distant fifth behind Labour; the Conservatives; Independents, and Lib Dems.
A by-election in these heightened times could feasibly put her status as a £14,500-a-year Councillor at risk.
Particularly if Reform UK were to join the slate of candidates!
- The News & Scar rushed up a story about the resignation but the lead photograph showed the wrong councillor. It was quickly taken down with visitors clicking on the story link being told: “Sorry We Can’t Find That Page”.
